If you like bargains (who doesn’t), then plan to shop in Cambridge August 5th and 6th. There will be three 2-day shopping events for the bargain hunter in you.

 The 41st Annual Maxwell Street Day Sale will be held on Friday and Saturday in downtown Cambridge. The two day sidewalk sale is sponsored by the Cambridge Area Chamber of Commerce. It will feature discounts at every storefront along Main Street. You’ll find furniture, art, clothing, pottery, jewelry and household items.  There’ll be music, food stands and fun shopping in the nostalgic tradition of Maxwell Street.

The Cambridge Community Wide Rummage Sale will feature yard and garage sales by Cambridge residents. Maps will be available at Piggly Wiggly, the banks and Daily Grind the week before the sale showing the locations of participating homeowners. The maps will also list many of the items that are for sale. You’ll find collections of Rowe Pottery, vases, angels and bird houses…plus framed pictures, children’s clothes, furniture, a patio set, microwave, kitchen wares, desks, tables and chairs.  Watch for the Rummage Sale signs.

 Friends of the Library Used Books Sale will offer a large selection of used books. You’ll find hardcover and paperback books that have been donated for resale by library patrons. They will be organized by category. Looking for a mystery, a cookbook or a classic novel? Now is your chance to find summer reading at bargain prices. The book sale is in the lower level of Amundson Center.  All book sale funds go to the support of the Cambridge Library.

It’s back…Umbrella Daze is back

July 11th, 2011

Umbrella Daze in Cambridge was a huge event during the 1980’s and 90’s. Then it faded away until last year’s reincarnation by Girl Scout Troop #2007.

 As a troop project the Cambridge Girl Scouts created the impetus to bring Umbrella Daze back. They took the lead to organize the event with help from the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce. In 2010 it was a one day event that included volleyball, a bounce house, ice cream social, food booths and live music.

 In 2011 it will be much, much more!  This year you’ll be rocking out on the shores of Lake Ripley. Kick off Umbrella Daze 2011 on “Friday night 7/29 to the music of Madison County. Gates open to Lake Ripley Park at 4 pm. The food booths and beer tent will be open. Madison County takes the stage from 7 pm to 11 pm.

Then on Saturday 7/30, there’s more fun at Ripley Park. At 9 am the tournaments for Boys Basketball and Women’s Volleyball will begin. Starting at 10 am local bands will be entertaining. At noon the Men’s Hoops tourney starts and the beer tent opens. The Lions Club will fire up the grills and serve their famous Chicken BBQ. Live music will continue throughout the day. Plus there is the beach, the lake, fun inflatables and the food court.

 Revisit the fun of Umbrella Daze on Friday and Saturday July 29th and 30th. Admission for Madison County on Friday is $5.00. Gates open Saturday at 8:15 with admission $3.00. Lake Ripley Park is just east of Cambridge on Park Road near the bowling alley.

Cruise on down to Mill Street in Cambridge to see classic cars

The 2nd Tuesday of the month is Keystone Kruise Night in Cambridge. The street next to the Keystone Grill is lined up with a variety of unique and cool vehicles from 5:30 to 8:30 PM.

 In May there were classic roadsters, pickups, VWs, station wagons, motorcycles and a 57 Chevy. Visitors can check out the cars, visit with owners and take pictures. Hey you might see the vehicle that your dad drove on your family vacations. The lineup of vehicles changes every month and Kruise Night continues through September.  

 Owners of antique, classic or really cool vehicles are encouraged to show their vehicle. Farmers Market returns to Cambridge on Fridays

 More than fifty years ago, Friday evening was the big shopping day in Cambridge. That’s when area farm families would all come into town to shop and socialize. Mom would buy groceries, dad would shop for tools, kids would get candy and watch movies in the park. All the stores stayed open late.

 The farmers will be returning to Cambridge on Fridays this summer. They’ll be selling locally produced fruits, vegetables and baked goods. Other vendors will offer eggs, goats milk, cheese, soaps, flowers, arts and crafts. There will also be organic burgers and kettle corn to snack on.  

The new Farmers Market will debut on June 3rd and will continue each Friday from 2:00 to 7:00 pm all summer. It will be located in Veterans Park on Main Street (Hwy 12) in downtown Cambridge.  

 The Cambridge Chamber of Commerce is bringing back this shopping tradition from the past.  A local artist will be hosting “cool kids project” to kick off the market.

 Bring the whole family. Shop the market, visit with neighbors and go out for fish fry at the local restaurants. Be a part of this tradition from the past.

Civil War band concert to cap off Heritage Day in Cambridge

In 1864 eighteen men from the Brodhead Brass Band enlisted in the Union Army as the band of the 1st Brigade, 3d Division, 15th Army Corps. They left their rural Wisconsin homes to participate, under the command of General William T. Sherman, in the campaigns of Northern Georgia and the Carolinas. The “Tradition of Excellence” that these men established, more than 145 years ago lives on today with the members of Wisconsin’s 1st Brigade Band.

On Saturday, May 14th, the 1st Brigade Band will march into Cambridge. They’ll be performing a free concert in Veteran’s Park from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. This will cap off the Civil War reenactment at Cambridge Heritage Day.

 The band MAKES HISTORY LIVE by presenting period brass band music, performed on antique instruments. Attired in uniforms and gowns, the Band’s musicians, color guard, and costumed ladies take you back to the 1860′s; to that turbulent era known as the Civil War. A nostalgic portrayal of the atmosphere of days gone by is generated by a unique form of showmanship that blends the sights and sounds of the period with historical anecdotes.

The music presented by the 1st Brigade Band is selected from extant books of Union and Confederate bands, from manuscripts and from original sheet music of the period. The library includes, in addition to the expected martial and patriotic airs, transcriptions and adaptations of operatic, orchestral and vocal literature, as well as a rich treasury of worship and dance music.

So bring your lawn chairs and blankets to listen to music of the Civil War. You’ll here camp music, marching songs, polkas, waltz’s and hymns.

Cambridge Heritage Day is a living history event that starts at 10 a.m. Saturday. It will include Civil War soldiers, town folks, displays, presentations, museum tours, Victorian Dance, outdoor market, food booths and the 1st Brigade Band Concert.

Mark your calendar for Cambridge Heritage Day – Civil War Reenactment on May 14th

And so it begins…the start of the Civil War created alarm throughout Wisconsin in the spring of 1861. Put yourself in the shoes of men, women and children of Cambridge during those early days of the war. Experience the hope and loyalty that was in the air as Cambridge sent fathers, sons and husbands off to fight for their country.

 On Saturday May 14th, you’re invited to witness this living history event commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War. You’ll see enactors portraying Union Soldiers, Wives of Company K and town’s people. Watch Cushing’s Battery fire cannons. Meet General Grant. Hear about life in the White House from Mary Todd Lincoln. Listen to songs of the Civil War and attend a Victorian dance.

 Other events include a pancake breakfast, rendezvous outdoor market, food booths, Civil War authors, touring the Historic School Museum and the 5th graders Civil War Wax Museum. From the opening ceremony in Cambridge Veterans Park to the camp buglers taps at days-end, the event is historical, educational and fun for your whole family.

Cure your March doldrums on a Cambridge drumlin hike

 The Cambridge area is well known for glaciated topography. There are kettles, moraines and drumlins throughout Jefferson County. Did you know that there is a drumlin on public land just 4 miles southeast of Cambridge?

 The Red Cedar Lake Waterfowl Production Area has a large drumlin.  The drumlin was formed by retreating glaciers that left the high, narrow ridge behind. With most of winter’s snow melting away, March is the perfect time for a hike.

This area has about 200 acres of fields, marsh and woods on the eastern shore of Red Cedar Lake. There are several natural and manmade ponds that attract waterfowl in the spring. And of course there is the drumlin that provides spectacular views of the countryside.

Hiking to the drumlin is easy. There is a gravel road that provides access to several lakeside homes. Walk up the road to the small pond andthen head north up along the ridge. You can’t miss it because the drumlin dominates the open landscape. This is the best time to hike these open fields. By summer the prairie grasses and weeds will be waist high and difficult to hike through.

 At the highest point of the drumlin you’ll be able to see the Cambridge water tower, the power station in Rockdale and when looking south, the southern shore of Lake Koshkonong.  The north end of the drumlin ends at a line fence and corn field. But don’t stop there. Turn west to the woods and lake beyond. In the woods you’ll find a small circular kettle surrounded by oak covered hillsides. Kettles are formed by buried glacial ice that melts and leaves a depression in the ground. The hilltops offer vistas of Red Cedar Lake and the marshes below.

 On recent a hike two deer were seen along the lakeshore, hawks were flying overhead and the rattled trill of Sandhill Cranes could be heard in distance. This is a great spot to get back into the outdoors after a long winter.      

 Directions: Take Hwy 12 southeast 4 miles to Hwy A. Turn right and go .6 of mile to the small parking area off Hwy A.  The US Fish and Wildlife Deptment own most of the property. The Wisconsin DNR owns the adjacent land bordering Red Cedar Lake.

Old time live radio is coming to Cambridge

February 1st, 2011

“Hi-Yo, Silver Away!” Experience the Golden Age of Radio on March 12th in Cambridge.

 That’s when an old time 1940s radio play will be performed by RG Productions. The audience will be able to see how live radio was performed 70 years ago. The play will feature productions of Burns and Allen, The Lone Ranger, My Friend Irma and the classic Abbott and Costello, “Who’s on First.”

 And yes, there will be commercial breaks.  Cambridge students will be performing 1940s style radio ads from participating businesses. Hey, even the ads could turn out to be a lot of fun!

 There will be two performances – 4 PM and 7 PM – at the Cambridge Historic Gym on Saturday March 12th. The play is a fund raiser sponsored by the Cambridge Heritage Day committee. Proceeds will benefit the Cambridge Food Pantry and the Heritage Day Civil War re-enactment on May 14th.

Advance tickets are now on sale for $5.50 per person. They can be purchased at BadgerBank and Cambridge State Bank in Cambridge. You can also order advance tickets online at www.historic-cambridge.org/event.htm. Tickets will also be available for $7.50 per person at the door. Children under 4 are free.

Brrrr…when it’s cold outside folks in Cambridge – head outside.

Yep! The cold, and snow and ice of winter are perfect for outdoor recreation in Cambridge. Check out the fun activities available in the Cambridge area.

Westside Park is where the young folk of Cambridge enjoy winter. The ice skating pond, sledding hill and warming house are a magnet for kids on a sunny winter day.

The park is located just a half block off Main St (Hwy 12) along Koshkonong Creek in Cambridge. The pond is flooded during cold weather by the Volunteer Fire Department and maintained by the Village. The wide sledding hill forms a backdrop to skaters. The screaming belly floppers add to the show of young people pretending to be NHL hockey players, Olympic speed skaters or Ice Capade Stars. Parents can watch their kids from the park benches or on the balcony of the heated warming house. It’s a winter wonderland scene right out of Currier and Ives.  

The park has ample street parking and washrooms. Just across the bridge you’ll find restaurants and a variety of shops in downtown Cambridge.

Cam-Rock Parks offer miles of scenic cross country ski trails. The trail head is just across the street from Westside Park on Hwy PQ. This ski and bike trail winds for two easy miles along Koshkonong Creek from Cambridge to Rockdale. It traverses woods, marsh, streams and crosses two bridges. Winter wildlife includes deer, fox, rabbit and many birds.

There are three separate park facilities along the route. You’ll pass through Cam-Rock 1 on the way to Rockdale. Cam-Rock 2 – on the east side of the creek – has an intermediate ski loop that can be accessed off Hwy B between Cambridge and Rockdale. Cam-Rock 3 – just outside of Rockdale – has been developed for off road biking. The tough terrain and 150 foot elevation provides adventure for the experienced skier.

The ski trails are groomed periodically. There are trail maps available at all three park shelters. You can stop at Heather’s Bar in Rockdale for beverage and burger before the return trip to Cambridge.
